“I was really upset last night. I’d
just been fired.” Surely he could scrape up a little understanding, but as she
stared into Christian’s brown eyes, she couldn’t read his thoughts. “I might
have said some things in the heat of the moment that I wouldn’t normally say.”
A pensive moment passed.
“It won’t work.” His tone was firm.
“I’m sorry you drove all the way out here, but you should just go.”
“You can’t go,” Molly cried from
the kitchen doorway, where she stood with a bowl and spoon in hand. “We need
you. Daddy burnt the grilled cheese again, and I hate burnt food. Yuck!”
This was Noelle’s one and only
chance to show Christian that she really could be helpful. Without weighing the
pros and cons of her actions, she approached the little girl. “I can make you a
grilled cheese.”
The girl’s eyes lit up. “Without
burning it?”
Noelle nodded.
Molly rushed forward. “And without
the crust?”
“You bet. Just show me to the
kitchen.” Noelle didn’t dare look in Christian’s direction, not wanting to see
his disapproval. Her stomach was already a quivering mass of nerves.
The girl took her by the hand and
led her to the kitchen. Noelle heard Christian’s solid footsteps behind them.
What was he thinking? Was he considering tossing her out? Probably. But she was
pretty certain he didn’t want to upset his daughter further. In just a matter
of minutes, Noelle concluded that if she could win over the daughter, she’d
have a real shot at winning over the father.
