Review:
This isn't my typical read but I like going out of my box if the book really does sound good. The plot sounded really interesting and pulled me in so I was looking forward to going out of my comfort zone. Although the beginning was slow as the author was laying the groundwork of the foundation to the story, I soon found myself completely immersed in the story and am so glad I had the other two books already on hand to continue the story. It was fun and captivating to see their uniquely different stories and how they come together in a sisterhood that will forever keep them united, an unbreakable bond. I enjoyed the different perspectives of each girl, it was done in such a way that it didn't confuse me as the reader. I was pleasantly surprised I liked this book and I look forward to sharing my thoughts on the last two books :)

Interview with Barbara Casey
How did you come up with the idea for
The FIG Mystery Series?
Thank you, Elisha, for inviting me to be
with you.
When I attended NC State University in
Raleigh, I used to drive by an orphanage each day on my way to class. It was an
imposing building on acres of manicured lawns, beautiful trees, and stone
buildings, and I often wondered about the children who lived there. Many years
later, after I became a published author of several adult novels, I remembered
that orphanage and decided it was time to write about it.
Was it difficult
to find a publisher?
The Cadence of Gypsies has
all of the elements to make a good book:
mystery, suspense, orphans, humor, and gypsies all wrapped in a touch of
the unbelievable. I was fortunate to find a publisher who loved it, and it was
she who encouraged me to make it into a series.
In The
Cadence of Gypsies, Book 1 in the series, the Voynich Manuscript plays
a big part. How did you make the connection between it and the three “Females
of Intellectual Genius (FIGs)?
Each of the FIGs—Dara, Mackenzie, and
Jennifer—have IQs in the genius range. In addition to that, each girl has
developed exceptional talents within that genius. For Dara, it is her innate
knowledge of understanding foreign and obsolete languages. Mackenzie’s genius
involves problem-solving and little-understood mathematical formulations.
Jennifer’s genius is her talent in art and music. Using these gifts they were
born with, they are able to help their teacher learn the truth about her own
background and how it connects to the most mysterious document in the world—the
Voynich Manuscript.
How many more
books do you plan to write in the FIG Mystery Series?
There are three books already published:
The
Cadence of Gypsies, The Wish Rider, and The Clock Flower. I will
write one more book to complete the series, and I have started my research for
it.
What will you
write once you have completed the FIG Mystery Series?
First I will grieve. These characters
have been living in my imagination for several years now. I have been through a
lot with them as they have searched for the answers as to why they were
orphans. Each time I finished writing the first three books, my husband set a
box of tissue on my desk because he knew I would be emotional. I am already
emotional about the last book in the series, but I have to write it in order to
complete all of the stories of these three remarkable young women. Following
that, I am under contract to write another adult nonfiction book.
Thank you again, Elisha, for your
interest in my writing, and especially the FIG Mystery Series. I wish you and
your bloggers my very best.
